Caustics in turbulent aerosols form along the Vieillefosse line at weak particle inertia

Caustic singularities of the spatial distribution particles in turbulent aerosols enhance collision rates and accelerate coagulation. Here we investigate how where caustics form at weak particle inertia, by analysing a three-dimensional Gaussian statistical model for persistent limit, flow varies slowly compared with relaxation time. In this case, correlations between particle- fluid-velocity gradients are strong, induced large, strain-dominated excursions gradients. These must cross characteristic threshold plane spanned invariants $Q$ $R$ Our method predicts that most likely way to reach is unique ``optimal fluctuation'' propagates along Vieillefosse line, $27R^2/4 +Q^3=0$. We determine shape optimal fluctuation as function time show it dominant numerical statistical-model simulations even moderate inertia.
